Trent Richardson of the Cleveland Browns is tackled by Indianapolis Colts defender Kavell Conner (53) during the first half of the Browns' loss Sunday in Indianapolis. "Trent is still learning on the go because he wasn't here during the preseason," said fellow running back Brandon Jackson. "He's taking those steps now as if it were preseason. It doesn't matter if you've won national championships and were a Heisman Trophy candidate, there's still a learning curve." Trying to churn out yards with excruciating cartilage damage to his ribs hasn't helped matters either. "It takes a little time," said Jackson, who's tried to play with a rib injury himself. "He's feeling his way through." One option would be for coach Pat Shurmur to shut Richardson down for upcoming home games against San Diego and Baltimore, let him rest through the bye week and come back strong in Dallas Nov. 18. "You just watch him, watch him practice, see where he's at physically and if he's ready to play, he'll play," Shurmur said Monday. "If we see that this is bothering him to the point where he can't perform, then we'll make those decisions as we go. I just want to make the point though, that there was a lot going on out there. It wasn't just Trent." Richardson, who wore a flak jacket during Sunday's 17-13 loss the Colts, was benched after failing to convert his third straight short-yardage opportunity. The first two times came on the goal-line on the Browns opening drive. On first down at the 2, he was stopped for a 1-yard gain off left tackle. On second down, he turned slightly sideways as if to protect the ribs and bounced it outside for a 3-yard loss. Later in the second quarter, he went off left end and was slammed for no gain on third and 1. With that, Shurmur had seen enough and planted him on the bench, where authentic nba jerseys he sat looking miffed. All three times, the Browns were in their jumbo running formation, with tackle Oniel Cousins in as an extra lineman. Still, they couldn't get the necessary yards. Richardson, who netted 8 yards on eight carries, said afterwards he felt he "should have been in the game" but was careful to say Shurmur made the right decision. "I'm not myself out there right now," he said. "You look at me, I guess I'm not running hard like I'm used to so I'm not out there right now. So [the injury] is worse than what people think it is." He said he's determined to play through it, but it remains to be seen if the Browns will let him. "Trent's a warrior," said Shurmur. "Trent wanted to play the whole game. He was constantly trying to convince me to keep him in there. I have to evaluate the way I see it. "He wanted to be in the game. I think that's important for everybody to know. But when I look at it, I want to make sure that we consider him, his health and everything as we move forward." Shurmur said it wasn't any one play that got Richardson yanked. "As I mentioned, there were some things that happened in the running game, and some of what I saw in the pass game, that were inefficient that were not Trent's fault," he said. Shurmur downplayed Richardson's absence during camp. "I think it's difficult when you miss time at critical points in the year," he said. "But he's out there playing, that's what's important." But there's no denying Richardson hasn't been able to produce discount nba jersys as was hoped so far. He's 22nd with 348 rushing yards and tied for 46th among the NFL's 50 leading rushers with a 3.4 average. He has only one 100-yard game -- at Cincinnati -- and only two of his 103runs have gone for 15 yards or more -- a 32-yarder for TD in Cincy and a 15-yarder for a score in New York. On only two occasions has he averaged more than 3.4 yards per game, and aside from a 5.7-yard average in Cincinnati, he's gaining 2.8 per clip. Of his 15 short-yardage opportunities, he's converted six. The one area where he's excelled is in scoring touchdowns -- he's tied sixth in the league with four. But Shurmur was quick to take the onus off his star rookie. "We need to be better," he said. "Rushing yards is a team thing just like stopping the run is a team thing. We need to call better plays, block better, run better. That's it. I'm confident we'll get it done this week." On Twitter: @marykaycabot
